6
Week Foundation Course
Triyoga, Chelsea February 15 - March 21 (Wednesdays)
7:45 - 9:00pm
This Foundation Course introduces the practice of yoga and what it might
be able to help achieve - ex: decrease stress levels, introduce healthier
breathing, or invite greater strength and ease in the body. The course
is accessible and fun, and highly experiential. It is based on a model
that learning can be an interactive, engaging and positive experience.
The first two weeks introduce key
principles that create important foundations such as how to breathe more
fully and where and how to position the feet and spine in many common
postures. The course then builds progressively, so that week-by-week,
the core principles become clearer and the poses, alignment and instructions
become more familiar. Unlike in a regular
drop-in class, where it's sometimes like a game of Simon-Says, students
in a Foundation Course will have time and space to see poses demonstrated
and explained, and given time to experience getting into and out of them
with skill. Dialogue and discussion are encouraged but not mandatory.
Each class will offer a balance of active
movement and time for relaxation. Standing poses, sun salutations, backbends
and seated poses such as twists and forward folds will be covered in
the curriculum, as well as an introduction to meditation. Students can
expect to have a working vocabulary of yoga, some common sequences, and
a healthier outlook on their bodies and minds. Most importantly, students
will discover a practice that feels good in their bodies that is accessible,
regardless of their age, shape or experience.

Toward Greater Equanimity:
A Day-Long Retreat
Sunday, February 26, 2012
10:00am - 5pm, triyoga PRIMROSE HILL
We have all felt that in our daily lives we sometimes need an energetic
boost, while other times we feel like seeking out a calm, quiet rest.
Both these tendencies are aimed at bringing our bodies and minds toward
a state of balance, or homeostasis. In this day-long retreat, we will
explore how our breath, postures and meditative practices can generate
equilibrium and steadiness in our bodies, thoughts and actions. Layered
into our physical practices will be the richness and wisdom of the
koshas, or the layers of human experience that include the physical,
energetic, mental and emotional, wisdom and body of bliss. It is believed
that the koshas are like an internal map, left to us by the ancient
yogis, that ultimately leads us on a journey toward greater awareness,
insight, and equanimity.
The morning will include an active, alignment and breath-based vinyasa
practice, and the afternoon a blend of restorative yoga, pranayama, exploration
of some yogic tenants and philosophies, and meditation. This retreat
is open to anyone except absolute beginners.
Yoga
Retreat -- Umbria, Italy
"Embodied Awareness"
with Mimi Kuo-Deemer and Margi Young
Thursday, May 25 - Friday, May 31, 2012
This is a retrea that I co-teach with Margi Young every
year at La Locanda Quercia Calente, a beautifully renovated farmhouse
in the Umbrian hills of Italy. Margi is a yoga teacher based in San Francisco
and formerly with OM Yoga in New York City. We bring together yogis from
across the continents to dine on delicious Umbrian cuisine and delve
deeply into the richness of Yoga.
Each day will begin with
an optional early morning meditation. After a light breakfast, there
will be one or two invigorating and enlivening vinyasa-based yoga classes,
with options for beginner/intermediate and intermediate/advanced classes.
Margi and Mimi will co-teach, which means lots of personal attention
for all participants. We will explore themes from Ayruveda and yogic
texts to enhance the practice: for example, observing how awareness of
the koshas (body, breath, mind, wisdom and bliss) and the elements (earth,
air, space, water and fire) can deepen our experience on the mat and
in everyday life.
La Locanda della Quercia Calante is near
the historic city of Orvieto (150 km/90 miles north of Rome). The property
has a spacious and fully equipped yoga studio, two swimming pools, a
whirlpool, elegant rooms, and a restaurant serving local Umbrian cuisine.
There is an organic farm on the property and local wineries that supply
the restaurant.

Circular and Linear: Qigong and Yoga
Sunday, April 15, 2:30 - 5:30pm, triyoga PRIMROSE HILL
(video clip of the qigong practice for the water element)
This
workshop explores the intersection of Qigong and Yoga. Qigong is an
ancient form of Chinese energy healing and martial art that integrates
the virtues of trust, integrity, wisdom, and compassion into the human
body and spirit. Like yoga, it incorporates deep breathing, meditation,
and static or dynamic movements aimed at creating greater health and
vitality for the practitioner. The actions generate and revitalize
the
qi, or energy in the body, which helps to nourish the organs
and dispel disease. In most yoga postures, emphasis is placed on linear
movements of the body that lengthen and extend the spine and limbs.
Qigong practices, however, tend to be circular and smooth, and engender
strong, rooted connections to the earth. These two combine to foster
a soft yet strong and rooted vinyasa flow.
Participants in this workshop will learn some basic
qigong practices that cultivate a sense of energy, rootedness and calm.
The poses will then be integrated and revisited in the context of an
active asana practice that joins aspects of both traditions into a seamless
union. All levels are welcome.
Hands-on Adjustment (including how to use props to adjust)
Saturday, June 23, 2:30 - 5:30pm, triyoga PRIMROSE HILL
This intermediate and advanced workshop is for yoga teachers and teachers
in training, or those interested in how energy can be transmitted and
communicated through safe and appropriate adjustments in asanas. Participants
will deepen their fundamental knowledge of postures and learn to give
adjustments with soft, intelligent hands, and use other tools such as
yoga belts and blankets to adjust.
Topics will include:
• learning the foundations and main principles of giving hands-on
adjustments in standing poses, backbends, twists, hip openers and forward
folds;
• using props to support and adjust where appropriate; and
• seeing bodies and discerning where physical touch in postures might
be helpful or feel good.
This workshop will be highly experiential and very hands-on.
